How to validate imported data

Introduction

The Apple TV Library import function depends on metadata in the Apple TV Library that is matchable with the metadata in TMDb. However, the metadata of TV Shows in Apple TV Library is often incomplete or incompatible. For example episode numbers that are a combination of season and episode numbers, like '104' representing episode 4 in season 1.

To match Apple TV Library metadata of TV shows with data in TMDb, you can use the Validate Imported Media dialog. When you use the Apple TV Library import function, this dialog is automatically available when necessary after the import has been completed. The correction dialog is also always available afterwards via the application menu.

Layout

In Movie Explorer Pro, select File > Validate > Imported Media in the menu to open the Validate Imported Media dialog. A split view with three sections appear, from left to right:

  • Sidebar Imported TV Shows, shows all imported TV shows that needs to be corrected.
  • Table list, shows the unmatched episodes of a selected TV show in the sidebar. It has two column sections:
    • Imported Episodes section shows the uncorrected Apple TV Library data. The Title column represents the imported episode title.
    • Matched Episodes section shows corrected data. This section is initially empty. The Year column represents the first air date of the first season of the matched TV show.
  • Side panel Matched Episode Details at the right side. With this panel you can edit selected data in the Matched Episodes section in the table list.
Steps

Follow these steps for each TV show in the sidebar, to correct the TV shows metadata of your purchased Apple TV media:

  1. Select a TV show in the sidebar and double-click to open the Search matching TV show dialog. In this dialog you can search for a matching TV show in TMDb. After selecting a TV show, season and episode numbers will be automatically assigned to episodes as much as possible based on the available data.
  2. Select a season, after multi-selecting unmatched episodes that belongs to one season. Use the Season dropdown to select a season. Repeat this for other unmatched seasons for the selected TV show.
  3. Select an episode for each unmatched episode. Select the correct episode from the Episode dropdown, to complete the match with TMDb.

Finally click on the Add to Catalog button to add the corrected episodes to the catalog. You can do this at any time, you do not have to wait until all episodes are matched. The button is enabled when at least one episode has been matched with TMDb.

Tips
  • To select multiple episode, click on the first episode, and hold-down the mouse button while moving the pointer to the last episode.
  • When you have previously imported data with the Apple TV Library import function before version 2.7, you must refresh the Apple TV Library location in the sidebar before you can use the Validate Imported Media dialog. To do this, select the Apple TV Library location in the sidebar, and choose Location > Refresh in the menu.
  • You can auto generate episode numbers when you select 2 or more episode related to one season from one TV show, by clicking on the Auto Fill Episodes button. The numbering will start with 1 for the first selected episode. This button is disabled when you have selected more episodes than available for the selected season.
  • To check the TMDb data of selected and matched episodes, click on the View Metadata in TMDb button.
Notes
  • After selecting a TV show, the app will copy valid imported season and episodes numbers to the Matched data section. The app will also match as much as possible seasons and episodes based on the content of episode titles. You can override these preselections.
  • All changes are saved in the database, even if you close the dialog by clicking on the Cancel button.
  • To remove matched data of selected episodes, right-click and choose Reset Matched Data in the context menu.
