Movie Explorer Pro 2.1: Certification, iTunes import and more

Movie Explorer Pro 2.1 adds support for regional content certification, iTunes metadata import, disk image indexing, built-in file copy and more.

Regional content certification

Movie Explorer Pro now supports retrieval and display of content certification, also known as content rating. Because content certification is very related to a region, we have implemented a function to change the certification region, and to update the content of the catalog with the new region.

  • Use menu File > Update Certification to update your current pre-2.1 catalog, or to switch to a new region.
  • Menu Window > Certification Overview opens a window that gives you an overview of all possible certificates of the currently active certification region. It shows also the number of movies and TV shows assigned to each certificate.

News Explorer 1.9.7 for macOS: Refinements and more

Version 1.9.7 of News Explorer for macOS contains fixes, refinements and a few new features.

New features

The following features are new:

  • Video podcasts, like this one from TED Talks, are now properly recognized and displayed.
  • Copy Link has been added as action to the Share menu. The app already contained multiple other ways to copy the link of the current article, but still a lot of users expect all export minded functions in the standard Share menu.
  • Open in Safari plus comparable actions for all other popular web browsers has been added to the Share menu. Like all other items in the Share menu in News Explorer, you can determine the visibility and assign shortcut keys to these new Share menu actions.
  • A status bar is displayed at the bottom of the article list when the app is syncing, showing the current action within the sync procedure.

News Explorer 1.9.7 for iOS: Compatibility fixes and more

Version 1.9.7 of News Explorer for iOS contains two important fixes and a few nice improvements. It turns out that from all OS updates this year, iOS 13 is by far the most challenging and time-consuming update, especially when the same app must remain compatible with iOS 12. The current code is full of if iOS 13.* then … else … conditions, in order to support a large range of iOS 13 specific changes like Dark Mode, updated navigation bar, new context menus, new multi-segment control style, and much more.

Background sync

The new background sync implementation in the previous version based on the new BackgroundTasks framework in iOS 13 has been rolled back. In turned out to be completely unreliable under real life conditions. The old Background App Refresh implementation has been slightly improved and worked reliably during our tests.

News Explorer 1.9.6: Compatibility update for iOS 13.0

Version 1.9.6 of News Explorer for iOS is the first in a row of updates, in order to make all platform editions of News Explorer compatible with the new OS releases of Apple.

This year the update for iOS 13 was extra challenging, because as a start, a lot of things were broken or looked really bad during the beta period. For example, the Settings app has been partly rewritten by Apple, resulting in a crash of the Settings app when you opened a News Explorer setting section. This is even happening in the GM seed of iOS 13.0. This forced us to integrate the News Explorer preferences within the app, instead of being part of the Settings app.

But iOS 13 also includes a lot of potentially good stuff, like Dark Mode and the new BackgroundTasks framework.

Dark Mode support

The System theme in News Explorer now fully adapts the system appearance of iOS 13, including Dark Mode. In addition to this, if you prefer the default Light theme instead of the light appearance of the System theme when not in Dark Mode, you can automatically toggle between these themes, by using the new Auto-switch themes setting in the Viewing section of the Preferences. This setting is default enabled.

News Explorer 1.9.4: New fonts and more

With version 1.9.4 of News Explorer, we wanted to improve the reading experience of the Article viewer. We did this by adding 26 new fonts to the article viewer font collection, selected from the Google Fonts collection based on legibility and overall design quality. You need an internet connection to use these fonts, although in most cases the fonts remain cached once they are downloaded.

Furthermore we added options to combine a serif body font with sans serif article title and article headers. The new fonts contain 6 serif fonts with matching sans serif fonts. If you select any other serif font, it will be combined with the system font, San Fransisco.

In addition to the new fonts, we improved support for titleless articles commonly found in microblogs.

News Explorer 1.9: Permanent Reader view and more

Originally we had other plans for the next version of News Explorer. In February, Postlight announced that their Mercury Web Parser API will stop working on 15 April. This service is used by all platform editions of News Explorer to generate the Mercury Reader view. We canceled most of the ongoing work on News Explorer, and refocused on providing the best Reader view experience possible, based on new solutions.

Updated Reader view engines

After endless research and experiments, we finally managed to get Mercury Web Parser working locally, inside the app without external dependencies. In addition to this, we dramatically improved the processing speed of the already integrated Arc90 Readability engine.

Download Buddy 1.9: Mojave compatibility improvements

Good old Download Buddy has been updated in order to be and hopefully stays compatible with Mojave. There are no big new features added, only fixes and some necessary system updates. Because nearly all changes are related to Mojave, the minimum required version of macOS is now 10.14. Users of older macOS versions can still download older compatible versions of Download Buddy.

Dark Modus

Mojave Dark Modus is now supported in all windows and views of Download Buddy. We have implemented this as much as possible according to Apple's guidelines. If you still see some small things that need to be improved, then please let us know.

Movie Explorer Pro 2.0.4: One plus one

Movie Explorer Pro 2.0.4 and Movie Explorer 2.0.4 (standard edition) is a very small update with one bug fix and an important improvement.

Duplicate genres fix

The function Update Localized Data contained a bug that could result in duplicate genres. This bug has been solved. The said function is part of the File menu and is being used to update localized data from one language (default English) to another language, according the language settings in the Advanced section of the Movie Explorer Preferences. If you have ever used this function, you may have duplicate genres in the sidebar and other parts of the app.

Movie Explorer Pro 2.0.3: Improvements and fixes

Movie Explorer Pro 2.0.3 and Movie Explorer 2.0.3 (standard edition) is a minor update that solves some performance issues and adds some small but handy new features.

Improved scanning performance

File scanning and especially rescanning of existing locations could be slow in the previous version. And when setting 'Read embedded metadata' was enabled, rescanning could 'take ages', as some users complained. After some research it became clear that this all was caused by a recent new implementation of progress handling, that seems technically cool at first sight, but very problematic and bad performing in real world scenarios. So we simply reimplemented the 'old way' of tracking progress, and that solved indeed a lot of issues.

Movie Explorer Pro 2.0: An introduction

Last year, we worked hard on the ‘next big thing’ for Movie Explorer, between all the News Explorer updates. We always wanted to add support for digital movie discs. And use our own large Blu-ray collection as a big and nice test case. Much time has been spent on ‘harvesting’ barcodes with movie titles, and finding usable data sources. We have also invested a lot on barcode scanning with the FaceTime camera. Which was not exactly simple, given the fact that especially older Macs are far-sighted. In addition, we have developed a lot of other useful and long-awaited features to make the app ‘Pro’ worthy.
